Melbourne: Fitzroy North

Fitzroy North is little pocket of a neighbourhood that has too often been overshadowed by it’s surrounding big brothers and sisters; Fitzroy, Collingwood, Carlton and Brunswick. Wrong and unjust is all I say, and more!

Here is my mini-guide to Fitzroy North. What to shop, what to explore and what to eat all the sunny afternoon long. Enjoy.

Blackhearts and Sparrows

119 Scotchmer St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Wines from all over the world for all budgets. The shop assistants are really helpful and always willing to work within your budget (don’t be shy to let them know you’re looking for the second cheapest bottle in the store… ). Delectable wines that shall not, will not and cannot disappoint.

Nature Boy Nrth

123 Scotchmer St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

This shop is part plant, part book and part pottery. So many locally made designs. You can find a treasure in here that is 100% Melbourne through and through, and it won’t even have a Southern Cross on it. Also, a must do if you have a succulent interest/obsession.

Muscrats Vintage & Handcrafted

108 Scotchmer St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Argh! They stock my new favourite jewellery designer! Muscrats’ selection of (denim) vintage, candles, jewels and trinkets is to die for. If you’re looking for a last minute gift (for yourself) or even a lovely pal of yours, here is the place to go.

Piedimonte’s SUPA IGA North Fitzroy

37-49A Best St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Fitzroy Norths biggest secret is: Piedimonte’s, pronunciation in Aussie Lingo; Pee-da-mon-tees. Easy. Here you can find some of the freshest and ripest fruit and veg ON TOP OF an overwhelming selection of treats sourced from Europe. This is a supermarket wonderland my friends, be ready to be buying cheeses, fresh bread and cheeses at an alarming speed. Remember to breathe, though.

Ride your bike around the neighbourhood

Ughhh! This neighbourhood is the best for a bicycle adventure! Get in a bike-pack (gang of mates on biking vehicles) and make it your mission to aimlessly ride about in the sunshine, see funny old houses and not get run over.

Edinburgh Gardens

Alfred Cres, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

The best date location! Or for picnics! Or having a kick of a ball of some sort! This park is so green and pretty, the grass just screams inhale me and die of hey fever. Best enjoyed with a rug, slab, tribe of good people and love in the air.

Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club

578 Brunswick St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Nothing says Australia more than a day at the bowls. Fitzroy Bowls club has the tunes and the vibes to get the young fellas going. This is such a great day for a group of good old mates. Get those annoying shoes off your tired, beautiful feet. Get a jug of Carlton in your hand. Get a bowling ball in your other. Smile, you’re gorgeous.

Moroccan Soup Bar

183 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

This is a feast every time, a FEAST I say! Such an excellent spot for a catch up with pals over some wine and some utterly mouthwatering food that will satisfy every appetite. My advice is to get the banquet and roll with it. If you want to add a splash of adventure to this meal, bring your own container for a takeaway, and ship your things over the road to Edinburgh Gardens with your bottles of wine. Genius idea.

Underwood Wine Bar

181 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Perfect for a little date night, whether it be first or fiftieth. You shall not be disappointed by the snacks, the dranks and the vibes in this homely little romance den. Friendly service, and a fairy lit courtyard out back= make-out setting galore.

Super Tasty Rooster

121 Scotchmer St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Don’t get me wrong, I am most definitely into the Green/No-fat?/ Dairy-free/ Smile-free diets… but who can go past a quality chicko and chips? I just don’t know. This shabby little shop serves it up hot and devilishly toothsome, all day errday.

Billy van Creamy

27/29 Best St, Fitzroy North VIC 3068

Need I say more than ice-cream? I know, ice-cream is also my best friend.
